Objectives
The aim of the EUREA project is to pool and enhance the digital resources of European universities by gathering them into extensive interoperable and multilingual European multimedia databases, and by developing tools and services to promote and exploit theses resources.
In the founding ideas of EUREA is the strong commitmment of nine leading research European Universities to support the ongoing processes of building European spaces of higher education and research, to reinforce their international influence and to break into the emerging market of e-learning".
In order to increase its chance to fully reach that goal, and do so in a sustainable maneer, the EUREA's partnership conducts a preliminary feasibility study with the support of the EC (via the eContent program): for 9 months, the LERU partner universities work together on identifying the best conditions for implementing and maintaining the planned high-quality system for pooling their academic digital resources (computerised lectures, digital teaching resources, audiovisual documents, etc.).
The feasibility study should lead to an implementation project.
Nine major outcomes are foreseen :
1 A mutual knowledge of all the EUREA partners
The partners of the project will have to gather a critical volume of high quality pedagogical and academic e-resources in order to have an internationally attractive mutualised e-content. Moreoverver, they will have to come to a precise agreement on the most suitable technical, managerial and business organisation to promote their e-content. This cannot be achieved without mutual knowledge (of one another) and without a "common language of exchange and mutualisation of their resources" . This is currently achieved by conducting inventories of the available e-content in all the partner universities, and by various modes of exchanges about e-learning practices, about the content of the partner's curricula, and about their specific needs and constraints.
2 A precise definition of the conditions concerning the partnership's enlargement to other European Universities
The leading-universities which are partners of the project form the future nucleus of a larger European wide library of eContents, i.e. they wish to enlarge the consortium to other European Universities. However, they consider that the strength of the EUREA project lies in the high quality and in the high volume of the academic e-content which could be mutualized. Therefore, they will define precisely how the partnership will be enlarged, while preserving the high quality of the collected e-resources.
